Community vision conversations to be held today in St. Joseph

The St. Joseph School District and architecture and planning partners will host conversations about the community's vision for how to best prepare St. Joseph students for academic and career success today from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

There will be new conversations at the top of each hour and will include the topics of: concepts for the high schools, strategic planning for education and the city, and finance and process.

Superintendent for the St. Joseph School District, Doug Van Zyl, says this is a good opportunity for the community to come and share their ideas.

"We have an opportunity for the community to come out and take a look at what the concepts are that DOR has put together, the architectural group that the board hired last year, and it's related to the high school concept.  So they can come in, take a look at the concepts, offer some feedback, have an opportunity to ask questions, have an opportunity to find out how this relates to 21st century learning, how it relates to strategic planning, and also any questions about the financial side of things."

Van Zyl adds that different people will be speaking and giving information about the topics.

"The board is going to be there kind of spread out listening to people.  And then the different people that are speaking to each area - like L.J. Hart, the financial group that we use, will be there to speak about finance.  And then when we take a look at 21st century learning and strategic planning, Dr. Williams, our Assistant Superintendent, and Tamara Wagner from the commerce will be there as well to be able to visit about how schools impact community, how 21st century learning impacts what you need for facilities, and those types of things.  So they'll be different topics each one of the hours, but they'll just kind of be an opportunity for people to come and go."

The conversations will be held at emPowerU at 518 South 6th Street in St. Joseph.
